Scientists Drill 2-Kilometer Hole Into West Antarctic Ice Sheet In A World First

Scientists have for the first time successfully drilled over two kilometres through the ice sheet in West Antarctica using hot water, an advance they say will help understand how the region will respond to a warming climate.

Scientists have for the first time successfully drilled over two kilometres through the ice sheet in West Antarctica using hot water, an advance they say will help understand how the region will respond to a warming climate.

The 11-person team led by scientists at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has been working on the Rutford Ice Stream for the last 12 weeks in freezing temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

On January 8, following a 63 hour continuous round-the-clock drilling operation, the team broke through to the sediment 2,152 metres below the surface, BAC said in a statement.

A string of instruments were fed through the borehole which will record water pressure, ice temperature and deformation within the ice around it.

The project, named BEAMISH, has been 20 years in the planning, and was attempted in 2004 without success.

"I have waited for this moment for a long time and am delighted that we have finally achieved our goal," said lead scientist Andy Smith from BAS.

"There are gaps in our knowledge of what is happening in West Antarctica and by studying the area where the ice sits on soft sediment we can understand better how this region may change in the future and contribute to global sea-level rise," Smith said.

The team has now drilled two holes, with the second completed on January 22, and plan to work on the ice until mid-February this year.

Further work will now continue at a second site a few kilometres away, researchers said.

"We know that warmer ocean waters are eroding many of West Antarctica's glaciers," said Keith Makinson, a physical oceanographer at BAS.

"What we are trying to understand is how slippery the sediment underneath these glaciers is, and therefore how quickly they might flow off the continent into the sea. This will help us determine future sea level rise from West Antarctica with more certainty," Makinson said.

WhatsApp launches new update, find out what it is

What's app  has once again come out with yet another update for its users. The messaging app has rolled out a subtle change that will encourage users to make video calls instead of voice calls. WhatsApp has released a beta update that introduces a new video call switch button. It appears when you’re in the middle of a WhatsApp voice call, and tapping it will send a request to the person you’re talking to, asking if they want to switch from voice to video. Previously, users had to cut the call to switch from a voice call to a video call. As per the report on WABetaInfo, the feature currently works on Android devices with Android 6.0 and above. WhatsApp in its previous beta version had rolled out features like Facebook stickers, a new layout for the GIF button and option to manage groups by demoting or removing members from the group. The messaging app has also hinted at group voice and video calls on the app. An option to reply privately to a group member was also seen in one of the...

Cannot Wait for Dark Mode on WhatsApp? Here is How to Enable it on Android and iOS

What good is an app that doesn’t do a Dark Mode these days? Facebook Messenger does it, Amazon Kindle app has it and even the next iterations of the iOS and Android operating systems are focusing extensively on the darker side of things. That does make us wonder why the details about the final release of the much-awaited Dark Mode on WhatsApp for Android and iOS devices is still not confirmed. The most popular instant messaging app in the world may be rolling out a stream of updates and new features with very beta and final release over the past few month, but it could just be that it is waiting for the final release of iOS 13 and Android Q to roll out the Dark Mode goodness. However, if you really don’t want to wait, there are workarounds to get Dark Mode working on WhatsApp on your Android phone or iPhone, right away. If you are using an Android phone, you will need to be running a beta version of Android Q to enable the Dark Mode for WhatsApp. A lot of Android phones...
